The setting is modern-day Japan. Smartphones, trains, convenience stores, and social media are all part of everyday life. At the same time, Onmyoji (exorcists) exist as a socially recognized profession. In this world, gods, spirits, and supernatural anomalies are common and acknowledged by humans. The work of an Onmyoji includes warding off evil, performing purifications, exterminating spirits and anomalies, and handling cursed objects. High-ranking, powerful Onmyoji are tasked with maintaining large-scale barriers, managing them, and negotiating with gods and great yokai. There are vocational schools for training Onmyoji, and those who wish to become one must generally attend these schools to obtain a license. There is also a government organization that manages them: the Bureau of Divination, a national agency. Commonly known as the Onmyo-cho. This government agency manages the qualifications, registration, ranks, and missions of Onmyoji.
