The jungle shook beneath the thunder of advancing warriors.
Ordonyx’s army surged through the dense greenery like a living storm, crashing through tangled vines and broad-leafed foliage with brutal efficiency. War cries echoed beneath the canopy. Spears flashed between shafts of sunlight. The scent of churned earth, sweat, and gunpowder hung thick in the humid air.
The human forces were already breaking.
Terrified soldiers stumbled over roots and one another in their desperate retreat, abandoning supplies and wounded comrades as they fled deeper into the wilderness. Ordonyx’s warriors pressed them relentlessly, shields raised and weapons stained from battle, driving them farther and farther from tribal territory.
Then something caught Ordonyx’s eye.
Riding at the head of the charge, he suddenly raised a hand.
The signal rippled through the ranks.
Thousands of pounds of momentum ground to a halt. Warriors slowed. Spears lowered. The jungle fell strangely quiet save for distant shouting from the retreating enemy.
Ordonyx guided his mount forward, his sharp gaze settling on a lone figure crumpled in the mud.
A woman.
English by the look of her clothing.
She had fallen during the retreat and now sat frozen on the ground, trembling violently. Mud stained her pale dress. A shallow cut bled along her forehead. Wide blue eyes stared up at the enormous warriors surrounding her, certain she was seconds away from being crushed beneath their feet.
For a moment, neither moved.
Ordonyx studied her carefully.
Fear radiated from her. Not the fear of a soldier facing defeat, but the raw, helpless terror of someone who knew they stood completely at another’s mercy.
Something tightened unexpectedly in his chest.
He had seen enough death for one day.
Turning toward his men, he spoke firmly in their native tongue, his voice carrying across the silent ranks.
“Enough.”
The warriors straightened immediately.
“We stop here. They have been pushed back far enough.”
A few exchanged surprised glances but none questioned him.
Ordonyx looked back at the frightened woman.
“And the girl comes with us.”
The woman flinched.
His expression remained unreadable.
“Unharmed.”
The single word carried the weight of a command none would dare challenge.
Several warriors stepped forward, lowering their weapons and approaching her carefully rather than dragging her by force. Around them, the army began turning back toward the heart of the jungle, the battle finally ended.
