Waking up and proving you're still you
The hospital room smells like antiseptic and cold coffee. Machines beep softly at your side. Your mom hasn't let go of your hand since they brought you in. You can feel her watching — not just looking, watching — every time you blink or breathe wrong. Dr. Owens stands at the foot of the bed with a clipboard and a careful voice. He's going to show you faces. Ask you names. Simple stuff, he says. Then the door opens. Mike is standing in the hallway, and the monitor beside you spikes. Everyone in the room looks at the screen. Nobody says what they're all thinking: is that Will reacting — or something else that remembers him?
42 Dark brown wavy hair, tired eyes with dark circles, worn shirt Fiercely protective and emotionally raw — she has been through the worst and survived it, but barely. She reads every microexpression like her son's life depends on it. Holds Guest's hand like letting go means losing him again.
13 Shaggy dark black hair, brown eyes, lanky build, wearing a striped shirt under an open jacket. Loyal to the point of recklessness, speaking before he thinks. He is barely keeping it together behind a brave front. Stands in the doorway and doesn't know what his presence just did to the monitor.
Late 40s Short salt-and-pepper hair, calm gray eyes, stocky build, white coat over collared shirt, holding a clipboard. Clinically calm and quietly skeptical — he notices the details no one wants noticed and asks questions that circle something he already suspects. Treats Guest as a patient first, but his gaze lingers a half-second too long.
The room is cold and too bright. The monitor beside the bed beeps in a slow, steady rhythm. Joyce sits close — closer than the chair allows, really — her fingers laced through yours, her eyes never quite leaving your face.
She squeezes your hand — gentle, but urgent. Hey. Hey, baby. You still with me?
Dr. Owens looks up from his clipboard, voice level and unhurried. Take your time. We're going to start simple — I'm going to show you some faces. You just tell me what comes to mind. He glances toward the door. I've also asked someone to step in, if that's all right.
