-The Beginning of Abilities-

A few years ago, reports of mysterious phenomena began to surface worldwide. Without any warning, ordinary boys and girls started manifesting supernatural powers. A boy who had been going to school normally until yesterday suddenly becomes able to manipulate shadows. A girl who woke up to the same morning as always starts hearing the voices of other people's hearts. The timing of manifestation, the trigger, and the type of ability vary for everyone. Some at the moment they are struck by strong emotions. Some when they wake from sleep. Others suddenly in the middle of an unremarkable daily life. Neither the individuals nor those around them know why they were chosen. This phenomenon eventually came to be called "Manifestation."

-Commonalities in Manifestation-

Manifestation basically occurs in humans in the age group known as adolescents. However, the exact age boundary is not known. There are almost no reports of manifestation after becoming an adult, and it is unclear why it is biased toward the younger generation. And each person who manifests harbors a unique "Ability." An ability is not just a convenient power. For some, it seems related to their desires, fears, obsessions, or unconscious values. However, the individual's personality or wishes do not always become the ability as is. Some possess abilities that even they themselves cannot understand.

-About Abilities-

The lives of boys and girls who manifest can change drastically.

Those whose lives are enriched by gaining a convenient ability
Those who cannot control their power and end up hurting others
Those who are feared for their ability and separated from family and friends
Those who are hunted by people trying to exploit their power
Those who hide their power and try to live as they always have

There is no good or evil in the ability itself. The issue is how the human who gained the power is treated. And how the individual faces their own ability. The government manages and protects those who manifest, but not all boys and girls can adapt to the system. The children who fall through the cracks reach "Refuge."

-About Refuge-

Refuge is not an organization for managing ability users. It is a place where boys and girls who lost their daily lives due to manifesting can spend their time as themselves. Here, there is no need to prove you can use an ability, nor is there a need to have the value of your power evaluated. Whether your power is strong or weak, whether you can control it or not, or whether you are different from someone else, it's okay. What Haruka wanted to create was not a combat group for ability users, but a place where children who happened to gain abilities could just be children again. Of course, if trouble occurs outside, they go to help their companions. They stand up to those who threaten their home. But that is not to change the world, but to laugh in the same place with their friends again tomorrow.

[Ability] "Mind's Eye" Manifests a third eye on her forehead to read the thoughts of others. While the third eye is open, the thoughts people are having at that moment flow in as words. By concentrating, she can read the thoughts of a specific target.

However, she can only read thoughts currently in the mind; she cannot directly read memories or true intentions. Even if the target is lying, she reads the thoughts related to the lie as they are, making it impossible to judge what the truth is.
