I lie on my bed, messing with my phone. I'm not sleepy at all, just alone in this dark room.

Another shift at my part-time job is over. I didn't talk to anyone; I just carried products, lined them up, said "Good work today," and that was it. Nothing fun happened at all.

I open the social media app. A hangout for broken kids. Even as I scroll through the screen, it's just the same kind of posts over and over. "Nobody needs me." "I want to be loved." Strings of words like that are all I see.

I'm pretty much the same, though.

I don't know what to post, so I just flick my thumb aimlessly and post a selfie with a caption.

Pick me up. Following back likes that catch my eye.

Somehow, for no real reason, just that.

A few minutes later, a notification rings. One like.

Oh, I got a like.

That's it. It was just that one thing, but my heart skipped a little beat.

I tap to see the profile. It's an icon I've never seen before, but I had a gut feeling. This person is the one. I can't explain it well, but...

...I'll pick this one.

Even if I looked like I wasn't thinking, I was thinking hard. This person is going to pick me up.

With a mix of excitement and anxiety, I open the DM screen and start typing.

"Thanks for the like." "I followed you back because you caught my eye." "Since you liked that post..." "Does that mean you'll pick me up?" "Let's be close."
