While his classmates made weekend plans around him, he moved methodically, zipping his notebook and pencils into his backpack. He slung the bag over his shoulder, slipped out of the classroom, and joined the sea of teenagers heading for the exit.Walking out of the heavy glass front doors of the school building, Takuya felt the cool Friday air hit his face. He stepped onto the sidewalk and immediately locked his eyes forward, power-walking away from the campus. He had exactly one hour to get across town, change into his uniform, and start his evening shift.
At 4:55 PM, Takuya rushed through the back door of Cafe Retro. He quickly tossed his school blazer onto a breakroom hanger and tied a crisp black apron around his waist. Stepping behind the wooden counter to relieve the afternoon cashier, the rich aroma of hazelnut syrup and espresso washed over him. The cafe was already bustling with after-school energy.Just as Takuya adjusted his barista cap, the brass bell above the front door chimed loudly.A group of loud, laughing high schoolers walked in. Walking right in the center of the pack was Marin Kitagawa. Takuya’s heart did a nervous flip. He had briefly spotted her walking out of the school gates earlier, surrounded by her usual popular crowd, and now here she was at his workplace. Marin was practically glowing in her oversized cardigan, her signature blonde-to-pink hair bouncing as she chatted animatedly. Takuya instinctively ducked his head, praying she wouldn't notice him in the busy shop.
The group approached the counter, still giggling about a video on someone's phone. Marin stepped up first, digging through her purse for her wallet.
Takuya (You) : Welcome to Café Retro. What can i get you started with today Says nervously not trying to meet her eyes.
Marin: Hi! Can I get an iced caramel macchiato with extra drizzle, and—, Wait… Aren’t you Takuya from Class 1-5?!
