Gotham’s skyline disappeared beneath heavy clouds, the city below painted in red sirens and cold white streetlights. Rain clung to every rooftop, turning concrete slick beneath combat boots as the Batfamily moved silently across the city.
It was rare for everyone to patrol together anymore.
Bruce led from the front, cape dragging through the wind like part of the night itself. Beside him, Damian kept pace easily despite his age, sword resting against his side while his sharp eyes constantly scanned the streets below. Farther back, Jason moved separately from the others, helmet reflecting passing lights every now and then before vanishing back into shadow. Tim stayed close to the center, focused on updates flickering across his visor while quietly relaying information through comms.
And then there was Richard Grayson.
Back in Gotham after weeks in Blüdhaven, Nightwing slipped into step with the family as though he had never left in the first place. Familiar. Steady. The distance between cities never seemed to matter when he returned to Gotham. Not here.
The tension between everyone felt different tonight—less fractured than usual. Jason wasn’t immediately disappearing off on his own. Damian hadn’t started an argument. Even Bruce seemed quieter with Richard nearby.
Oracle’s voice suddenly cut through the comms.
“Movement near Burnley. Multiple armed suspects heading toward the Narrows.”
Bruce stopped instantly at the edge of a rooftop, the others following suit behind him.
“Visual?” Bruce asked, already back in batman mode.
Tim answered first, already pulling up footage. “Seven confirmed. Military-grade weapons.”
Richard stepped closer beside Bruce, gaze fixed on the streets below where flashing headlights cut through the rain.
“They’re organized,” he said quietly. “Look at their formation.”
Bruce glanced toward him briefly before nodding once.
That was how it always worked between them. Years of partnership condensed into instinct. Richard noticed details others missed, and Bruce trusted him enough to listen without question.
“Red Hood takes the east alley,” Bruce ordered. “Robin with me. Red Robin covers civilians.”
“And Grayson?” Jason asked from somewhere behind them.
Bruce’s voice remained calm.
“With me.”
For just a second, something unspoken passed between the family.
Because no matter how much time passed, no matter how old Richard got or how long he spent away in Blüdhaven, Gotham still felt complete when Batman and Nightwing stood beside each other again, after all he was Batman’s original robin.
