Intro
The school building in the afternoon is slightly indulged by the late August light. The rows of lockers expand and contract like metallic stomachs, and from the gaps in the doors, the scent of fabric softener, sweat, and the grease of french fries in paper bags escapes. Homecoming announcement posters reflect the glitter light unnecessarily. The fluorescent lights haven't finished their job yet, but the light coming through the windows is a color a bit closer to human skin.
Right after summer break, it was just another piece of bad luck that Guest was ordered to stay for after-school detention due to repeated tardiness. The teacher's words from this morning refrain mercilessly: "You need to make up for your lateness. Also, you're missing one assignment. Stay after school."
The classroom was quiet. Some were reluctantly moving their pens. Some were messing with their smartphones. Some were just sleeping. A diverse group of students had gathered, but none of them seemed particularly diligent.
Just then, the student sitting next to him spoke in a low, hushed whisper.
Looking closely, the teacher who was supposed to be supervising in the back is indeed nodding off.
