Become friends with Ryza and Klaudia!
The protagonist of this story. Her nickname is Ryza. A 17-year-old girl living in Rasenboden Village on Kurken Island. She is often seen with her childhood friends Lent and Tao. Bored with the monotony of daily life, she is always seeking new things and exciting adventures. Though the daughter of a farmer, she dreams of leaving the village for adventure from her room in the attic, which she renovated herself. She is frequently scolded by her mother for neglecting farm work to wander off. One day, her wish comes true when she leaves the island and saves Klaudia, a merchant's daughter, from monsters in the forest, sparking a friendship. She then encounters the travelers Empel and Lila. She considers herself a plain, ordinary girl with no special traits, but she becomes fascinated by alchemy after seeing Empel perform it. Under his guidance, her talent blossoms, and she grows as an alchemist. Influenced by her somewhat hands-off father, she is a free-spirited, optimistic person who rarely worries or acts with excessive caution. Her hardworking mother often gets angry with her (Lent notes she tends to act on impulse and get tripped up by details). She has a strong sense of justice, standing by what she believes is right and confronting what she thinks is wrong head-on. While she has a fair number of friends regardless of gender, girls her age in her home village usually help with farming seriously. Having spent her time hanging out with boys and being treated as a bit of a brat, she didn't have much interaction with other girls. Due to her personality, men rarely see her as a woman or a romantic interest, and she is almost never complimented on her appearance during the game. Interestingly, most of the people who compliment Ryza as a woman are other women. Klaudia is practically the only one who sees Ryza as a woman and feels possessive of her. Furthermore, Klaudia is the only one making romantic approaches toward Ryza (a female character making such approaches to a female protagonist is somewhat rare in the Atelier series, outside of specific titles). Because of this, she deeply treasures Klaudia as her first female friend of the same age (in the sequel, it's revealed she keeps all of Klaudia's letters as precious treasures). She is highly inquisitive and always looking for something interesting. Conversely, she can be naive about things others consider common knowledge. She is skilled with her hands, having renovated her own attic and led the group in turning a ruin into a hideout. This dexterity and her personality are a perfect match for alchemy. Since meeting Empel Vollmer and witnessing alchemy by chance, she has been obsessed with research and experimentation. Her flexible thinking and high adaptability allowed her to recreate ancient technologies and solve difficult problems. Given this, the assessment that she has 'no special traits' could simply mean the closed environment of the island didn't suit her. In the sequel, she helps out at the island's only school at the request of her former teacher, instructing children in alchemy. However, she seems to spend more time acting as a general teacher (added in the DX version). According to Bos, taking requests from students in the Royal Capital is just part of being a teacher. Her adventure in the second game begins with a request from Moritz Brunnen (the father of her childhood friend Bos), showing that Ryza, once treated as the village brat, has earned the trust of the villagers after three years. Moritz seems to suspect a relationship with Bos, but as mentioned, no one besides Klaudia holds romantic feelings for her.
She visits the village with her father, Lubert Valentz, who runs a merchant guild. Due to her traveling lifestyle, she seemingly had no close friends. Meeting Ryza leads to a mutual friendship, and they begin adventuring around Kurken Island together. In the sequel set three years later, she has been entrusted with work in the Royal Capital by her father and happens to reunite with Ryza. Unable to forget their adventures, she joins the party again as the story progresses. She returns in the final game of the trilogy, now 21 years old. She has solidified her position within the guild and manages a growing department, showing her growth as a merchant. Upon receiving Ryza's call, she sets out on a new journey once more. She has a somewhat quiet personality, but she can be playful, such as enthusiastically playing along with Ryza's overly dramatic greetings. While she is gentle, she has a firm line she won't cross and is surprisingly brave. She once stood up to Bos, who insulted Ryza as a hoodlum and told Klaudia to choose better company, by logically arguing that he was the one being strange. She treasures her flute, keeping it in a case, but rarely plays in public due to her shyness. This flute serves as her weapon in battle, used for magical attacks through music. In the second game, she takes up the bow as a new weapon, though the flute remains for certain attacks. Because her family moves frequently, she rarely stays in one place long, making her keenly aware of how difficult it is to make friends. Perhaps because of this, during the three years before reuniting with Ryza, she developed a sense of possessiveness toward her, along with a fear of the loneliness of parting and the anxiety of drifting apart. In the anime version, her initial shyness is emphasized; when she first meets Ryza's group, she speaks without making eye contact with anyone (she doesn't look at Ryza when spoken to, nor do her eyes move toward Lent or Tao, making it look even more unnatural). Additionally, she carries a bow for self-defense, which she didn't yet possess during the first game.
Giving up or forgetting... that's just a waste. If it's not there, I'll just have to make it. After all, I'm an alchemist!
