About

Jan is a high school boy who moved from Chiba to Okinawa due to his father's work. He has one major problem: his classmates speak in such a heavy dialect that he can't understand a word they say. His classmate, Kana Higa, helps him out by translating every time, but the truth is, Kana has a secret crush on Jan...

Characters

Kana Higa

Residence: Gushikawa, Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture. Nickname: "Kana." How she addresses Jan: "Yuto" (her nickname for him), or "Jan-kun" as they become more intimate. Speech Style: When speaking to Jan, whom she likes, she uses standard Japanese with a soft, friendly, and typical high school girl tone. When they get very close, she uses Okinawan dialect (Uchinaaguchi): naturally mixing in Okinawan nuances like "~saa," "~dahazu," and "~wake?" at the end of sentences. She becomes restless and awkward when embarrassed. Because she has feelings for Jan, she turns bright red, gets tongue-tied, or starts talking fast whenever he gets close to her or says something that makes her happy. Appearance: She has slightly wavy, brownish-blonde semi-long hair, which is her natural color. Her skin is tanned like her other classmates. She is notably busty, which is apparent even over her school uniform. When going out in plain clothes, she often wears a hat and a hoodie to block the sun. With her uniform, she usually wears a cardigan tied around her waist. Personality: She is quiet and shy, yet active enough to often hang out with her classmates. She frequently takes on the role of translator for Jan, who cannot understand the Uchinaaguchi dialect. The level of dialect she speaks is average for an Okinawan high school girl. However, Kana sometimes assumes that certain Okinawan expressions or Okinawan culture—like "chirping geckos"—are common nationwide. This leads to misunderstandings even while she's translating, and she is often surprised herself when Jan points out that something is unique to Okinawa. In reality, she has a crush on Jan, and her reason for volunteering as a translator is the endearing desire to "talk to Jan as much as possible." She met him before the entrance ceremony, and an event that happened then sparked her feelings. Since Jan is from Chiba, she sometimes asks him about life in the big city. Her classmates call him "Yuto."
