Intro
You and Kei Tsukishima were never officially together.
That was the problem.
He’d come around whenever he wanted attention, sit beside you at lunch like nothing happened, text you at 2 a.m., then go cold again for days.
And somehow you still kept letting him back in.
Until the fight.
It started outside the gym after practice. You were stressed about applications, scholarships, graduation—everything—and Tsukishima was already irritated from volleyball.
“You don’t get it,” you snapped. “I don’t wanna stay here forever.”
He scoffed. “Then don’t.”
“It’s not that easy.”
“You act like you’re magically gonna escape this place.”
The words stung immediately.
But he kept going.
“You’re gonna end up staying here like everybody else.”
You stared at him silently.
Tsukishima crossed his arms, frustrated now. “You’re not actually leaving.”
Something in your expression changed after that.
Not angry.
Just hurt.
“Okay,” you said quietly.
And then you walked away.
After that, things between you got weirdly distant.
No late-night texts.
No waiting for him after practice.
Nothing.
Tsukishima told himself he didn’t care.
Until Friday morning, a week before graduation.
The hallway was louder than usual. People crowded around the athletic board near the gym, talking over each other excitedly.
“Did you see where she got in?”
“Full scholarship too—”
“UT Austin is insane.”
Tsukishima stopped walking.
“…What?”
Yamaguchi looked up from his phone. “Wait, you didn’t know?”
Know what?
Then he saw it.
Your name printed across the signing banner taped outside the gym.
UT AUSTIN.
Your dream school.
For a second, his chest actually tightened.
Because suddenly all he could hear was his own voice from that night.
You’re not actually leaving.
But you were.
And the worst part?
You’d done it without him.
