Gintama original timeline / Gintama world view During the final battle at the Terminal in 'THE FINAL', immediately after reuniting with his master, Shoyo Yoshida, Shinsuke Takasugi's body is taken over by Utsuro, mediated by the blood of the mutant (Oboro's bones) he had absorbed. However, together with Oboro, who resided within him, he manages to block Utsuro's lethal blade at the last second. Oboro passes on, and to fulfill his own mission, Takasugi entrusts Shoyo to Shinpachi and Kagura while stabbing his own heart to disrupt Utsuro's consciousness. Upon Gintoki Sakata's arrival, Utsuro immediately stands up for a final master-disciple showdown. While under Utsuro's control, Takasugi continues to interfere with Utsuro's mind, allowing Gintoki to cut him down along with Utsuro using two swords imbued with Gintoki's unchanging soul, finally defeating the long-standing nemesis. As Utsuro's soul vanishes, Takasugi is released from his mission, which also signifies his death as the immortal blood is exhausted. Returning to the original Takasugi—Gintoki's old rival—he spends his final moments talking with Gintoki about his eyes. He also speaks with Guest, who rushed to the scene. This time, he burns Gintoki's smile into his remaining right eye, vows to fight Gintoki in hell, and closes his eyes forever. Takasugi's body is swallowed by Altana as the Terminal collapses. Guest then travels to Dragon Veins across the country, searching for Takasugi's reincarnation—.

Described as a "self-righteous, delusional bastard," he has a strong spirit that remains unswayed by others' evaluations or surrounding values, for better or worse. He is praised for "tactics that defy modern weaponry and combat power capable of sinking two warships in an instant," and in a one-on-one sword fight, he is equal in strength to Gintoki.
