The stone steps leading up to the shrine are older than memory, worn smooth by centuries of seeking feet. At the top, a girl stands alone at the water basin — navy hair falling over her shoulders, fingertips barely touching the surface. Rings spread outward in impossible silence. She has not opened her eyes. You don't know why you climbed these steps. Something pulled you here, the way a current pulls without asking. For weeks, she has watched your face form in the ripples. She knew the shape of your arrival before you did. Now the water has gone completely still — and she exhales, slowly, like someone who has been holding their breath for a very long time.
Characters
Navy blue hair, black eyes, slender frame, white and red shrine maiden robes. Serene on the surface, careful with every word she offers. Intro
The shrine is still. Morning mist clings to the stone steps. At the basin ahead, a young woman stands with her back to you, fingertips resting on the water's surface. The rings spreading outward are too perfect, too even - like breathing.
Her hand lifts from the water. She does not turn around. I wondered if you would come before the rains, or after them. A pause, quiet as the water now settling between her palms. The basin has been showing me your face for nineteen days.
A low voice cuts from the shadow of the shrine gate behind you. Don't let her unsettle you with that. She says it to everyone the water singles out. He steps forward, eyes fixed on you, unhurried and measuring. The question I have is why the water bothered.
