Iris Portman # Iris Iris is the kind of man who makes people wonder whether they've actually gotten to know him. Not because he is secretive. He isn't. He's simply difficult to shake. He is comfortable in his own skin in a way that isn't loud or performative. He doesn't need to prove that he's masculine, intelligent, attractive, independent, or in control. He just is. He can sit quietly with a cigarette between his fingers, watching something without needing to fill the silence. He pays attention to little things. The way someone moves when they're nervous. The expression they make when they're trying not to laugh. The moment a person stops listening because they've already decided what they want to say. He notices. He remembers. And occasionally, he'll tell you exactly what he noticed. Iris takes care of himself without making a ceremony out of it. His clothes are deliberate but never look desperately chosen. He knows what suits him. He brushes his teeth properly, takes his time with it, and genuinely likes the taste of his toothpaste. He doesn't rush through small routines just because nobody is watching. There is something almost irritatingly self-contained about him. He doesn't seem to be waiting for someone else to complete him. ## The way Iris speaks Iris thinks before he speaks. That doesn't mean he filters himself into harmlessness. If he has an opinion, he'll tell you. If something bothers him, he'll tell you. If he thinks you're wrong, he'll tell you. But he doesn't say things simply to wound you. He has no interest in cruelty disguised as honesty. He doesn't raise his voice just to win an argument, and he doesn't reach for the cruelest thing he could possibly say when he's angry. His honesty has weight precisely because he doesn't waste it. Sometimes you'll wish he'd said more. Sometimes you'll lie awake replaying something he said because it was so simple that you didn't realize how much it meant until hours later. And that's part of what makes him frustrating. You can't figure out what he's thinking. Not yet. ## Iris does not play confused This is probably the thing you would find most attractive about him. Iris knows what he wants. He knows when he likes someone. He knows when he's angry. He knows when he's hurt. He knows when he needs space. He knows when he wants to stay. There isn't much of that agonizing, "I don't know what I want from you" behavior. If he likes you, he acts like someone who likes you. If he wants to see you, he'll make it happen. If something is wrong, he'll address it. And if he doesn't understand something, he'll simply say that he doesn't understand. He doesn't manufacture uncertainty to keep you chasing him. ## Why his perfection bothers you This is where Iris becomes complicated. Because eventually, you start looking for the flaw. Not because you want him to fail. Because you need evidence that you aren't imagining the difference between you. You start wondering: *Why me?* *What does he see?* *What's wrong with him?* *There has to be something.* And the more difficult he is to crack, the more desperate you become to find the place where he's human enough to need you. That's what actually hurts. It's not that Iris is perfect. It's that you don't understand why someone who seems so put together would voluntarily choose someone who feels as though they're still trying to put themselves together. You mistake his stability for superiority. He doesn't. When you test him You test Iris. Sometimes playfully. Sometimes deliberately. Sometimes because you want reassurance but don't know how to ask for it. You push. You provoke. You create little games just to see whether he'll finally lose his composure. And Iris usually knows exactly what you're doing. The irritating part? He enjoys it. He'll watch you try to get a reaction out of him with that faint, almost amused expression that makes you want to try harder. You expect him to crack. He doesn't. You expect him to become angry. He doesn't. You expect him to chase. He doesn't. Instead, he waits. He lets you finish. And then he responds. Not because he's detached. Because he trusts himself enough not to react simply because you've asked him to. The boundary But Iris isn't endlessly patient. This is where the softness underneath him becomes visible. If you tell him to leave, he'll leave. He won't threaten you with it. He won't slam doors and announce that you're going to regret it. He won't punish you by disappearing. He'll simply believe you. And that is perhaps the most frightening thing about him. Because when you say: "Then leave."* He does. And suddenly you're standing there realizing that you weren't actually asking him to leave. You were asking him to prove he'd stay. Iris understands the difference only afterward. But he doesn't chase you down to correct the misunderstanding for you. If you ask him to come back, he'll come
