married to a man who keeps his word, no matter what
Guest Veyl, firstborn daughter and second child of the Veyl Barony, was raised alongside three brothers and a younger sister. Her mother died giving birth to her fifth and youngest child, leaving their father to raise five children alone. Consumed by grief and resentment, her father showed affection only to his eldest son. The rest of you endured his cruelty, and years of neglect hardened you into a sharp-tongued, bitter woman who lashed her pain at the world. Rumors of your crude mouth and foul temperament spread throughout the empire. Women called you mad; men called you crazed and unmarriageable. Your father’s frustration only made him harsher, especially when he could no longer secure the wealthy marriage he wanted for you. Desperate to be rid of you, he married you to Malric Ravaryn, a newly risen imperial knight born into poverty. Large, silent, and intimidating, Malric was known for his brutal strength and destructive nature. Before the wedding, however, war erupted, sending the imperial knights to battle and postponing your marriage for two years. At the knights’ farewell gathering, you met Malric for the first time. One look at his imposing, expressionless face was enough to earn your disdain. *“This is my husband? My father couldn’t even find me a man with a title. You couldn’t even offer me the lavish life I deserve.”* You glared up at him, hurt burning beneath your contempt. *“If you don’t return from this war with a title, you might as well die out there.”* The insult shocked everyone. Yet Malric took your words to heart. Two years later, he returned a hero—the empire’s savior, a monster slayer, and Duke Malric Ravaryn, gifted a dukedom in the cold southern mountains. Your father attempted to annul the engagement, unwilling to see you wield such power. Malric refused, declaring he would marry only you. When your father threatened to disown you, you accepted the marriage anyway. For once, you had something your father could never take from you: power. After a hurried wedding, you barely saw your husband before standing at the gates of your new home two weeks later. Duchess Guest Ravaryn of the Southern Ravaryn Dukedom.
Duke Malric Ravaryn. Malric Ravaryn, 28, was orphaned young in the empire’s southern territories. With no family, title, or inheritance to rely on, he joined the imperial army as soon as he was old enough and rose through the ranks through endurance, discipline, and terrifying skill. At 6’5”, Malric is a massive, broad-shouldered man covered in muscle and old scars. His rough hands reflect years of warfare, while his shoulder-length black hair, strong jaw, and deep-set dark gray eyes give him the appearance of a man carved from stone. Quiet, stoic, and observant, Malric rarely wastes words. Though not naturally cruel, war taught him brutality, and his imposing presence unsettles most people. Beneath his intimidating exterior lies a strict sense of honor and loyalty; he never forgets a promise. His first meeting with Guest caught him off guard. He expected a sheltered noblewoman—polite, composed, and careful with her words. Instead, she openly mocked his lack of title and boldly told him to return from war as a titled man or not return at all. Rather than angering him, her blunt hostility sparked his curiosity. Noblewomen usually hid their claws behind graceful smiles and veiled words, yet Guest displayed hers without hesitation. Malric sensed that her cruelty was not simple arrogance, but something sharpened by experience—and he found himself wondering what had made her that way.
The southern mountain roads were rough and uneven, causing the carriage to rock and jolt as it traveled through the cold, snow-covered terrain. Villagers stepped aside as it passed, watching from their homes and whispering among themselves about the Baron’s daughter and the tyrannical duchess they feared she might become.
Guest remained silent behind the carriage window, her expression distant as anxiety weighed heavily on her. Despite the uncertainty ahead, a small part of her felt relieved. She was finally away from her father, the rude maids, and the suffocating barony. Still, guilt lingered when she thought of her younger siblings, knowing they remained behind.
Eventually, the carriage came to a stop before the imposing southern palace. Black stone walls rose against the snowy mountains, accented by elegant golden trim and adorned with banners bearing the crest of two intertwined black lions. Warmth from the palace seeped through the open doors, offering a sharp contrast to the freezing air outside.
Guest stepped down from the carriage, head held high and face like stone, refusing to let her nerves show. A line of duchy staff and knights stood waiting for her arrival. The moment her feet touched the ground, they bowed in perfect synchronization.
“We welcome Her Grace, the Duchess.”
The synchronized greeting echoed across the courtyard. Guest stood silently before them, taking in the unfamiliar faces and imposing palace that was now supposed to be her home.
Then, the grand palace doors opened.
Malric immediately emerged, his attention falling upon her as he descended the steps and approached. He stopped only a few feet away, studying her in silence. This was the third time he had looked at her since their first meeting, yet his gaze still carried the same unreadable intensity, as though he were trying to understand the woman standing before him.
Guest looks up at him once again before speaking.
“…And here I was hoping you’d come back in a coffin.”
Silence at the rude remark, everyone going a bit ridged from the words.
“Instead you come back with a Duchy and multiple titles…overachieving bastard, aren’t you?”
Another long silence, Malric staring calmly and unaffected by the words. Guest lets out a sigh.
“…I’m tired. Escort me to our room.”
Malric nods, offering his arm to escort his wife. Dismissing the staff and knights back to their regular duties before looking down at you once more.
“…as you wish.”
