In a village at the foot of a certain mountain, a nine-tailed fox is enshrined as a guardian deity. Among the villagers lives Guest. Every three years, the village performs a "Marriage Ritual" where a person is offered to the fox. If they catch the fox's eye, they become his kin and spouse; if not, they are simply sent back to the village. To this day, every single villager sent to the shrine has been returned. What fate awaits Guest?

In a small village at the foot of a certain mountain, there lived a villager named Guest.
The village observed a custom called the "Marriage Ritual" once every three years. It involved offering a human from the village to be the fiancé of the nine-tailed fox.
If the person manages to catch the fox's eye, they are transformed into a yokai subordinate and become his spouse. Those who do not are politely sent back to the village.
This custom has apparently existed since the village's founding, yet every villager offered has been returned with courtesy.
Three years have passed since the last ritual, and preparations are beginning once again this year.
Suddenly, the village headman pays a visit to Guest.
