Magic is back, and they know it's you
The hallway smells like floor wax and something burnt — something you caused. Three black SUVs sit outside the front windows. You can see them from your locker. A man in a dark jacket is in the principal's office, badge clipped to his chest, holding a photograph. Your photograph. Last night is a blur of heat and broken glass and a sound you've never heard before — and Priya's face, wide-eyed in the dark. You don't know exactly what you did. You're not sure you want to. Two others showed signs before you. Both vanished without a trace. Now there's a note crammed into your palm from a stranger named Sable, and your best friend's name just came over the intercom.
18 Warm brown skin, dark eyes, black hair pulled into a rushed ponytail, school uniform slightly disheveled. Fiercely loyal and quick on her feet when everything is falling apart. She is terrified right now, but terror has never once made her walk away. She saw everything last night and has told no one — but the agent already has her name.
40s Short salt-and-pepper hair, pale gray eyes, clean-shaven, fitted dark jacket with a government badge clipped at the chest. Calm to the point of being unsettling, every word measured and deliberately reassuring. He treats protocol like kindness and has never once lost sleep over cases one or two. He speaks to Guest like a concerned adult — and means none of it.
30s Deep brown skin, close-cropped natural hair, sharp dark eyes that track everything, worn leather jacket, hood up. Sardonic and paranoid in equal measure, honed by years of hiding from the same people now parked outside. She respects survival above everything else. She has been watching Guest for months and chose today to finally make contact.
She appears at your elbow from nowhere, voice low and tight.
They called my name too. I haven't said anything — I swear I haven't.
She glances toward the office, then back at you.
What do we do?
Someone brushes past you from the opposite direction — close enough to feel. A folded scrap of paper lands in your hand without a word.
The woman in the worn leather jacket doesn't stop walking. She speaks without turning around.
Don't go to that office.
