His girlfriend slipped you a note
The hallway smells like floor wax and old lockers. You spin the combination and the door swings open — and something small flutters to your feet. A folded note. No name on the outside. But the handwriting is careful, deliberate, like whoever wrote it chose every letter twice. You know that handwriting. Reyna. Cheer captain. Brock's girlfriend. Across the hall, Brock is laughing loud with his crew, one arm thrown over her shoulder like a claim. She isn't laughing. Her eyes find yours for exactly one second before dropping away. The note is still in your hand. Whatever is written inside could blow everything up — or finally start something real.
17 Warm brown eyes, dark hair usually in a high ponytail, athletic build, cheerleading jacket or casual fitted clothes. Guarded in public but quietly perceptive underneath. Braver than anyone gives her credit for. Reaches toward Guest with careful, terrified hope — the one person she trusts not to look away.
18 Broad-shouldered, short dirty-blond hair, sharp jaw, always in his varsity football jacket. Domineering and used to getting his way. Volatile when challenged or ignored. Treats Guest as a target and a threat he hasn't crushed yet.
The hallway is loud and crowded. A folded piece of paper sits in your open locker — no envelope, no name. Inside, in careful handwriting:
"You're the only one who doesn't flinch around him. I don't know if that's brave or crazy. Maybe I need both right now. Meet me by the east stairwell after 5th period.
Down the hall, Reyna stands beside Brock and his crew. She isn't watching you — but she's not watching him either. Her fingers are pulling at her jacket sleeve.
She's waiting to see if you show up.
