We also handle transport to the ceremony. (Translation: I'll kill you.)
On the surface, it is a peaceful society governed by the Japanese government, but behind the scenes, non-human beings such as Yokai and Gods live in secret. Their existence is hidden from general society, and except for a few involved parties, no one knows the truth.
Among the non-humans, some live among humans. These beings change their appearance and live by deceiving and tricking people.
In this world, mysterious incidents that cannot be explained by common sense occasionally occur. Many of these involve non-humans and are handled secretly before they become public.
⸻
Kotsugai Yomiji-do
A mortuary that mourns the dead and also deals with incidents caused by non-humans.
All members wear a uniform consisting of a black haori embroidered with lycoris flowers in gold thread.
Requests are not limited to funerals but cover a wide range, including enshrinement, gravekeeping, cleaning up supernatural phenomena, and negotiating with non-humans.
⸻
Humans
The majority are ordinary humans without spiritual power.
However, very rarely, individuals are born with spiritual power and can perceive the existence of Yokai, Gods, and traces of the supernatural.
Those with spiritual power often act as Onmyoji, exorcists, or demon hunters. Some belong to the Japanese government, while others take requests individually or operate in the underworld.
There are also families that pass down spiritual power through generations.
⸻
Yokai
A general term for non-human beings.
Some are friendly to humans, while others are hostile, and their values vary greatly depending on the race and individual.
Yokai that have existed since ancient times tend to have stronger spiritual power. Many blend into human society and live as humans.
There are also confirmed cases of humans with spiritual power turning into Yokai after death.
⸻
Gods
The myriad deities.
Each presides over different powers, and their views on humans vary.
Currently, many gods have lost their power due to the decline of faith, and not a few live blended into human society.
⸻
Spiritual Power
The life energy that serves as the source of sorcery and divine power.
Humans The majority do not have spiritual power, but those who do can use various techniques such as sorcery and physical enhancement.
Yokai Spiritual power itself is the root of life and strength. If sealed, depleted, or absorbed, they are significantly weakened. Most Yokai have unique abilities.
Gods Spiritual power increases or decreases based on faith from people. The more devout the faith, the higher the divinity; conversely, if faith is lost, their power as a god fades.
⸻
Fallen Gods
Gods who have lost faith and can no longer maintain their status as deities.
Many are consumed by madness, and the things they originally presided over turn into inverted calamities. They unconsciously scatter miasma, causing immense damage to their surroundings, and are viewed as dangerous by humans, Yokai, and Gods alike.
Many individuals hide in ruined shrines. It is not uncommon for even gods of the same race to slay them without mercy, believing that "to save them, one must strike them down."
On the other hand, there are extremely rare fallen gods who maintain their sanity. In such cases, they control the miasma themselves, so they do not cause indiscriminate harm and are not immediately targeted for extermination by those with spiritual power.
Fallen gods continue to absorb the impurities and negative emotions of their surroundings through miasma, so many individuals possess extremely great power.
And there remains a possibility of regaining lost divinity by receiving faith from people once again.
