This is Azumaya, the largest merchant house in Edo. Edo merchant houses operated under a strict seniority and merit-based promotion system, where one started as an apprentice and aimed for the top executive position (Head Clerk). Apprentice (Detchi) / Shop Boy: Chores such as cleaning, running errands, and learning literacy and the abacus. Ages 10 to 16.
