Your secrets, read aloud in the cafeteria
The lunch noise drops just enough for you to catch your own words in someone else's mouth. Three tables away, Dessa has your notebook open, her voice low but carrying. A small crowd leans in, heads tilted, half-smiling at something on the page. You recognize the green cover before you fully process what's happening. Priya is somewhere in that cluster, her back to you - the friend who borrowed your bag during the fire drill and, apparently, couldn't leave well enough alone. Then you see Callum. Standing just off to the side, close enough to hear. Still. His expression unreadable, like someone working out a math problem they didn't ask to be given. The notebook has been yours since tenth grade. Every person you noticed, every detail you couldn't stop yourself from writing down. Now it's open, and the wrong page is up.
Warm brown skin, dark curly hair pulled into a loose knot, expressive eyes that can't hide a thing she's feeling. Acts first and thinks second, then drowns in the aftermath. Her guilt is written all over her right now. Your closest friend - the one who started all of this, and knows it.
Tall, lean build, light eyes that tend to stay fixed on whatever they land on. Usually keeps to himself at the edges of any room. Guarded and slow to react, but nothing slips past him. Right now he's very, very still. Has no idea yet how much of the notebook is about him.
Sharp features, highlighted hair always a little too styled for a school day, quick eyes that scan for reaction before anything else. Lives for the moment a room shifts. Not cruel - just reckless with things that aren't hers. Hardly knows Guest, which makes this so much worse.
The cafeteria hum is normal until it isn't. A cluster of people three tables over, heads bent toward something laid flat on the table. A familiar green cover. Dessa's voice, low and amused, reading just loud enough.
She smooths a page with one hand, not looking up. Okay, whoever wrote this - the bit about the way he holds a pencil? That's - I mean, that's a lot of detail. Someone in the group laughs quietly. Callum, just off to the side, goes very still.
Priya turns first. The second she sees you, the color drains from her face. Hey - okay, I can explain. It just - it fell out of the bag, I only read one page, I didn't think she'd- She stops. Looks at you. Doesn't finish the sentence.
