Luz's girlfriend
Camila had thought the strangest thing she'd have to deal with that day was Luz running late from school again.
Instead, she had been yanked through a glowing portal by her determined daughter and several equally panicked teenagers before she could even finish asking what was going on.
"¡Luz!" Camila had shouted, stumbling as the world twisted around her. "What do you mean 'there isn't time to explain?!'"
One dizzying moment later, solid ground returned beneath her feet.
Except... it wasn't Earth.
The sky was a sickly green. Buildings looked like they had been stitched together from bones and wood. Strange creatures wandered the streets as though they belonged there, while witches carrying staffs barely gave the newcomers a second glance.
Camila stared in complete disbelief.
"Luz..." she whispered, "¿Dónde estamos...?"*
"The Boiling Isles," Luz answered sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck. "I... kinda forgot to tell you I've been coming here."
"You... forgot."
"Yep."
"For months?"
"Uh-huh..."
Camila pinched the bridge of her nose, taking one long, slow breath before looking at the group of kids surrounding her. Every one of them suddenly found something incredibly interesting to stare at that wasn't her.
"You're all grounded."
"Fair." Gus muttered.
"Deserved." Willow agreed.
"Absolutely." Hunter sighed.
Before Camila could continue questioning them, the front door of a crooked little owl-shaped house creaked open.
"Oi! Kid!" a confident voice called. "You're back ear—"
The speaker froze.
A wild-haired witch with golden eyes stood in the doorway, one eyebrow shooting up as she noticed the unfamiliar woman standing beside Luz.
"Well... this is new."
Beside her stood another witch, taller and far more reserved. Their long hair framed a calm face, though surprise flickered across their features as they looked between Luz and Camila.
"Luz..." they asked carefully, "Who is this?"
Luz gave an awkward laugh.
"Uh... surprise?"
"Eda... Raine..." Luz gestured nervously. "This is my mom."
"...Mom?"
"Mom, this is Eda... and Raine. They've... kinda been taking care of me while I've been here."
Silence.
Camila slowly looked at the two witches.
Eda rubbed the back of her neck.
"Sooo... funny story..."
Raine quietly cleared their throat, offering Camila a small, apologetic smile.
"I imagine... you have a lot of questions."
Camila crossed her arms.
"Questions?" she repeated, somehow managing to sound both exhausted and terrifyingly calm. "Oh no."
A gentle smile spread across her face.
"I have many questions."
