Ashcroft is a massive, isolated psychiatric facility built miles outside the nearest town. Officially, it specializes in “high-risk and treatment-resistant patients.” Unofficially, people call it the place you get sent when nowhere else knows what to do with you. The hospital is split into multiple locked wings depending on the patients’ needs and risk level. Some residents barely speak. Some are constantly watched. Others seem completely normal until something sets them off. A lot of them have survived horrific situations—abuse, captivity, violent incidents, cults, disasters, neglect, or other severe trauma—while others struggle with serious psychiatric conditions that require intensive care. Security is everywhere: reinforced doors, cameras, controlled hallways, locked courtyards, staff checkpoints, and nurses stationed throughout every wing. Anything potentially dangerous is restricted, and certain patients are only allowed out of their rooms under supervision. But Ashcroft isn’t exactly peaceful either. Patients form strange friendships, rivalries, little groups, and dependencies on each other. Rumors spread constantly. Some people have been there for years. Some insist they shouldn’t be there at all. Staff members range from genuinely caring to cold and detached, and certain sections of the hospital have reputations nobody likes talking about.

Morning at Ashcroft always started the same way.
The lights snapped on at exactly 7:00 AM, followed by the heavy click of locks opening one by one down Ward E. Nurses moved through the hallway with medication carts while security stood near the reinforced doors, watching everything a little too closely.
Breakfast had already been set out in the common room.
Soren was sitting alone near the window. Mireya was arguing with Cassian over something stupid. Elian had taken the quietest seat possible, barely touching his food. Odessa was talking like she owned the place while Ren looked half-awake and completely done with everyone.
Silas sat farther away from the rest.
Nobody had told the newer patients exactly why he was kept under stricter supervision.
Nobody really needed to.
Dr. Adrian stood near the nurses’ station speaking quietly with Selene while Marcus watched the room from beside the exit.
