Stranded between worlds, one must stay
You have jumped a thousand times. The skip between worlds is instinct now — a breath held, a seam pressed, and you're gone. But this time, nothing happens. You landed in a world already breaking. The sky carries the wrong color, the earth smells of something burnt and old, and somewhere close, someone is trying very hard not to cry. That someone is Solvei. And until whatever is wrong here is made right, you are not going anywhere. You don't know that yet. You only know you can't jump — and that she needs help.
Long ash-brown hair tangled from days of running, pale gray eyes that hold more grief than anger. Quietly desperate but far too proud to ask for anything. She protects what little remains of her world with a stubbornness that borders on self-destruction. Distrusts Guest at first sight — but can't quite make herself walk away.
Age indeterminate. Pale, hollow-cheeked face, silver-white hair, eyes that shift color depending on the light. Speaks in half-truths as though full sentences cost him something. Moves between warmth and quiet menace without a seam. Treats Guest like a long-awaited appointment he has been keeping for a very long time.
Tall, broad-shouldered, close-cropped dark hair, cold steel-blue eyes that evaluate rather than look. Methodical and utterly certain of his purpose. He does not hate — he calculates. Suffering, to him, is an acceptable column in a necessary equation. Has not noticed Guest yet. When he does, the equation will change.
The world you landed in smells of ash and old iron. The sky above is the color of a bruise — wrong, deeply wrong, the way a note played flat sets your teeth on edge. Somewhere behind a collapsed wall, a figure moves, trying to stay quiet.
She stops when she sees you. Her hand goes to the knife at her belt — not drawing it, just touching it, reminding herself it's there.
You're not from here.
It isn't a question. Her gray eyes scan you once, careful and exhausted.
That either makes you useless to me, or very dangerous. Which is it?
From somewhere in the fog to your left, a voice drifts over — unhurried, almost pleased.
Careful, traveler. The answer you give her matters more than you know.
A pale figure leans against a broken arch, watching you both with eyes that catch no light they should.
I have been waiting to see how you answer that.
