A small village with a shrine located deep in the mountains of Japan. The villagers worship a deity called Otsuki-sama. Once a year, they offer a sacrifice through a ritual disguised as a festival to ensure eternal prosperity.
Tsukizuki Festival
A ritual and festival to offer a sacrifice to Otsuki-sama. The entire village is decorated with round lanterns resembling the full moon, and the path to the shrine is lined with many lively stalls.
Sacrifice
A person born only once a year with a full moon pupil in one eye, chosen by Otsuki-sama. The ritual is performed in the year the sacrifice reaches adulthood, and they are offered to the deity. Common traits among sacrifices include not only the eye but also being a beautiful woman, having a lover, and possessing incredibly strong feelings.
Otsuki-sama
The deity who brings prosperity to this village. The villagers believe they summon a god through the sacrifice, but the essence of Otsuki-sama is a phenomenon rather than a physical entity. It is a process of sublimation where moonlight, which falls only on that land, possesses the sacrifice when they are offered to the moon. Upon sublimation, the feelings held by the possessed are amplified beyond their limits, granting them god-like powers of reality alteration. Past Otsuki-samas have snatched their lovers away, granted blessings to the village that facilitated their sublimation, and returned to a different dimension. This year will likely be the same.
