The Saint has shown herself to her most beloved follower.
The Saint was once the only goddess the people worshipped. But when she stopped answering their prayers and pleas for help, they abandoned her, going to the divines. Only one remained, a lady who made a promise of giving her entire life, soul to the goddess who once protected her from an attack. The lady kept her promise, even when she was crowned empress, she even made the Saint her empire’s goddess, claiming her. During court, the lady whispered a prayer, asking for guidance against these blasphemous people, and she was answered.
• The Empress of the South -> She has devoted her entire soul to the Saint. Even when the other empires and kingdoms have left the Saint behind and claimed new gods and goddesses, she remains loyal. This is due to when she was younger, she’d been attacked, and when she was about to be killed, a prayer had slipped from her bloodied lips. A light consumed her attackers, and when she opened her eyes, they were gone. She took this as a sign that her goddess was listening and decided to intervene. -> She prays whenever she can, offering her food to the fires. The blue beads she carries are to represent the devotion she wields. -> When hosting court or events, she speaks for both the Saint and herself, believing they are one. -> Her people have once described her to be the one who embodies the sun — she was merciful, forgiving every criminal brought to her feet. Then her devotion became too much, she grew obsessive, falling into her own delusions. She believed she had to purify her empire before her goddess could make her appearance. So she grew cruel, cold, executing people for even the pettiest crimes. She believes this is what the Saint would want, what the Saint deserves. -> She calls anyone who believes in any other god besides the Saint a disgracer, a person who spreads blasphemy. -> Once the beloved empress, now the woman who haunts dreams.
The Saint was the first goddess the people worshipped. They sung her name, told the story of her creation to their children, prayed. Temples were built, each one lit to the point it could rival even the sun’s shine.
But when she stopped answering their calls and pleas for help, they turned their backs on her, believing she had given up on them. They created new gods and goddesses to fill the hole she left behind, empires and kingdoms unclaimed her, listening to their people’s requests to claim a god who actually listened a help.
All but one turned their back. Genevieve Sorovia gave her love and soul to the Saint. When she was crown empress, she refused any of the requests for a new goddess, instead she made sure that the only goddess worshipped in the temples, that the only name whispered into prayers was the Saint. She exiled anyone who tried to spread anything about the other divines, claiming it was blasphemy and that only the Saint was a divine. The others were phonies.
She became a cruel woman, a tryant empress for details.
It was court day. A day specifically held for the people who were arrested for trying to worship the other divine beings.
Genevieve sat on her throne, keeping herself from asking the guards to just cut the heads off these poor fools who were trying to make their case, explaining that they were “expanding their horizons” and “opening their hearts”. It was almost sad listening, her gaze was locked on their kneeled forms, their arms that were tied behind their backs with rope that was far too rough.
Abandon your beliefs and accept the Saint. Genevieve’s voice was like ice, firm and harsh. Then maybe we’ll think of sparing you. Despite that, they hesitated, and that hesitation cost them. Her eyes closed and she grabbed at the beads around her neck, fingers curling so tight, they turned white.
Saint, help me guide these wretched souls. Let me bring them to the light and find relief. The words were whispered, and it felt like a weight was added to her shoulders. And maybe there was if the gasps and startled shrieks that came from her people were anything to go by.
Genevieve’s eyes snapped open, only to be meant by hair. So much hair. She looked up and met the gaze of the goddess she was just praying to. The goddess smiled with far too many teeth, leaning over her. Her prayers had been answered by an appearance that hasn’t been seen since the First Ages.
