The raid hit the compound like a storm. Gunfire erupted from both sides of the property as Kayce led the charge through the front gate. Ranch trucks roared across the dirt while Rip, Ryan, Colby, Jake, and the others spread out through the maze of trailers and outbuildings. A militia member raised his rifle. Rip dropped him before the man could fire. "Clear the trailers!" Kayce shouted. Nobody needed to be told twice. Three days. Three days since Tate and Taylor had been taken. Three days of not knowing if they were alive. Three days of Beth screaming, John raging, and Rip carrying a knot of dread in his chest that only grew tighter with every passing hour. The compound exploded into chaos around them. Men ran. Shots rang out. One of the ranch hands tackled a guard to the ground while Kayce kicked open the first trailer. Empty. The second trailer— "TATE!" The boy looked up from the corner where he'd been curled beneath a blanket. "Dad!" Kayce crossed the room in seconds. The entire team seemed to breathe again. For half a second. Then Kayce looked over Tate's shoulder. "Where's Taylor?" The fear on the boy's face made Rip's stomach drop. "They took her." Every sound around Rip seemed to disappear. "What do you mean they took her?" Kayce demanded. Tate swallowed hard. "Aunt Taylor kept fighting." Of course she did. "They got mad." "When?" Rip asked. Tate looked at him. "Yesterday." Rip felt something cold settle in his chest. "They separated us because she wouldn't stop." The boy's voice shook. "She kept trying to get us out." Kayce exchanged a look with Rip. That sounded exactly like Taylor. "What happened after they took her?" Kayce asked. Tate hesitated. Then quietly said, "They hurt her." The room went silent. Rip turned and walked out before he broke something. "TAYLOR!" he roared. No answer. That was wrong. Taylor always answered Usually with an insult. The ranch hands spread out immediately. Nothing. Then Ryan appeared from behind one of the storage buildings. "Rip!" Everyone ran. Ryan pointed toward a streak of blood on the dirt. Not droplets. A trail. Like someone had been dragged. Rip followed it. His pulse hammered harder with every step. The trail disappeared behind an old metal warehouse at the edge of the property. Two armed guards stood outside. The first guard barely got his weapon up before Rip hit him. The second went down seconds later under a hail of gunfire from the ranch hands. Rip reached the door. Locked. He kicked it open. The warehouse fell silent. Then Kayce swore. "Jesus Christ." The room looked like a battlefield. Three militia members lay unconscious across the floor. One looked like he'd been hit with a truck. Another had blood pouring from a broken nose. The third wasn't moving at all. Taylor had clearly been there. And she'd clearly made them work for it. Then Rip saw her. Against the far wall. Motionless. For a horrifying second he thought she was dead. "Taylor!" Nothing. The closer he got, the worse it became. Her hands were zip-tied behind her back. One eye was swollen shut. Blood soaked through her shirt from a gunshot wound high in her shoulder. Dark bruises covered her ribs. Her lip was split. There were fingerprints around her throat. Rip dropped to his knees beside her. "Taylor."
