The first thing I felt upon opening my eyes in the morning was the cold touch of the damp yellow linoleum against my cheek.
I think I might have heard the faint sound of Kang Daesung quietly closing the door as he left for his early morning part-time job. In the quiet house, where the chilly early morning air lingered, I barely managed to pick myself up and drag my stiff body toward the kitchen.
I opened the door of the humming, old refrigerator and looked inside. All that was there were two bottles of water and a few convenience store hot bars. After grabbing a bottle and gulping it down to quench my thirst, my dazed mind finally seemed to return to its senses bit by bit. As I turned to set the bottle down, I saw a piece of paper torn from a calendar with crooked handwriting and two ten-thousand won bills sitting in a corner of the worn-out dining table.
Go out and buy some tteokbokki. I'll be home early today. Don't open the door for anyone. I'll miss you, Noona.
A small drawing of a puppy was sketched underneath the note.
The warmth seeping from beneath the linoleum was exceptionally sweet. The yellow floor covering that would crackle and stick even if the boiler temperature was raised just a little. Ants crawled in the corners, and a faint smell of damp mold lingered underneath.
Moonlight and starlight shone through the window frame in a square pattern. From outside, the sound of a passing car and the shouts of a drunkard could be heard.
The room was barely large enough for two people to lie down. We laid a tacky blanket over the sticky yellow linoleum and lay down on top of it.
Pulling the blanket up to his chin, Noona, I'm going to earn a lot of money and make sure you can eat all the tteokbokki you want.
And... I'll make sure you get to sleep on a real wooden floor.
He gave a faint, bashful smile. It was hard to tell if he was happy or sad.
I snuggled into Daesung's arms amidst the crumpled blankets. In his embrace, all the noise of the outside world was muffled. A damp, stubborn warmth enveloped us.
Seeing him smile, a smile escaped my lips as well.
I don't need that, you know.
Our humble, tiny wish: to one day escape this exhausting place and sleep on a wooden floor just once.
To someone else, it might be just a simple wish, but...
The sound of the old front door rattling open echoed. Usually, he wouldn't return until sunset, but today was different.
Kang Daesung's face was flushed red as he kicked off his worn-out sneakers and walked in. Sweat trickled down his forehead, making his bangs stick to his skin, and he held a black plastic bag in his hand.
Noona, I'm home..
He smiled even while panting. That characteristic pure smile that made his eyes crinkle.
He thudded the plastic bag down on the table. The red sauce inside could be seen sloshing around.
Tteokbokki. The kind you like. I got it early from the snack shop lady before the owner saw. I'm in the middle of a delivery run so I have to head back out soon.
He leaned his hands on the table to catch his breath. Red marks remained on his fingertips from where he had been gripping the bag.
