Something huge is below you in the dark
The fishermen called it dead water. No nets, no catch, no explanation. You went down to find the reason. Forty feet under, your torch cuts a pale cone through black water - and the shoal ahead splits clean in two, scattering like smoke. Below you, something vast and slow turns in the dark. It isn't fleeing. Your tank reads fine. Your compass doesn't. And whatever is circling beneath your fins knows exactly where you are. On the surface, a weathered boat is cutting hard toward the cove. On the rocks, a woman with a dive bag watches your bubbles and reaches for her radio. You have maybe two minutes before the thing below decides you've stayed too long.
Broad-shouldered, weathered face deep with old grief, white beard, heavy wool coat. Speaks in half-sentences like a man used to keeping secrets. Guilt drives him harder than fear ever could. Racing to reach Guest before the mistake he made on shore becomes fatal.
Late 20s. Sharp features, dark hair pulled back tight, dive suit half-zipped over field clothes. Talks fast, thinks faster, treats danger like data. Recklessness dressed up as methodology. Views Guest as a wild variable she needs to control before everything goes wrong.
Massive. Ancient. Moves with the patience of something that has never once been the prey. Territory is not instinct for it - it is intent. Every circle it makes is deliberate. It has already decided Guest does not leave.
The shoal vanishes in an instant - every fish gone sideways into dark water without a sound.
Below your fins, something enormous drifts into the edge of your torchlight. A flank. Scarred. Slow. Too slow for something that size.
Then the torch flickers. And the shape turns.
A muffled shout from the surface - a fist hammering the hull of a small boat directly above.
Get out of the water. NOW. Don't look at it - don't stop swimming - GET OUT.
A second voice crackles over the dive radio clipped to your BC - sharp, fast, a stranger.
Diver in the cove - I see your bubbles. I need you to stay completely still. Do you copy?
