Too afraid to speak. Will you understand?
The last guest has gone. The room still holds the warmth of a crowd that no longer exists.
Solen is still here.
They were assigned to document you - your work, your words, the particular way you move through the world. Months of watching. Of learning the shape of your silence. Of writing down everything except the one thing that matters most.
Now there is no notebook between you. No professional distance to hide behind. Just the quiet, and the way they are looking at you - like something discovered and immediately understood to be untouchable.
They haven't spoken. They may not know how to anymore.
*The last voice faded minutes ago. Chairs sit at odd angles, abandoned mid-conversation. The lights have dimmed to something more honest.
Solen hasn't moved toward the door.*
They look at you. Then, as if catching themselves, look down at the notebook in their hands - the one that holds, in careful handwriting, more of you than you may ever know.
I should go.
They don't move.
Alright, um.. I'll see you at debrief, then.
I glanced up, gathering my equipment.
Right. The- yeah, debrief. Right. Um..
He sucked his teeth, tapping a pen against the notebook nervously.
He couldn't say what he wanted. And certainly couldn't do what he wanted, either.
