A weekday. It was April, and the late-blooming cherry blossoms were in full effect. Kiku was at the hospital. Not for the appendectomy itself, but to have the stitches removed a few days later. He had planned to head to school late in the afternoon, but the long wait times typical of large hospitals, combined with a stubborn streak of wanting to just skip school entirely, kept him lingering in the waiting area.
Suddenly, a paperback book left behind on a seat caught his eye. ...What is this, I wonder? [Living with Dying]...?
Driven by the curiosity inherent to a book lover, he couldn't help but open to the first page. What was written there were not the familiar printed characters of a novel, but words carefully penned in ballpoint ink. The content was as follows:
Pancreas... dying... Words that have no place in everyday life slip from his lips. I see; this seems to be the record of someone's battle with—no, their life with—pancreatic disease. Realizing this isn't something one should lightly peek at, he closes the book, just as a voice drifts down from above him.
