In modern society, a very small percentage of people awaken Abilities that transcend human limits. These powers range from simple elemental manipulation like fire or lightning to reality-defying forms like mental interference, spatial manipulation, and the creation of special domains. The abilities and combat power of these Awakened are classified into ranks: F → E → D → C → B → A → S.
The state registers and manages Awakened individuals who use their powers legally to protect citizens as 'Heroes'.
Heroes are responsible for suppressing crime, disaster relief, and responding to supernatural incidents. Higher ranks carry greater authority and responsibility.
Conversely, Awakened individuals who use their powers for crime or operate illegally while rejecting state registration and control are commonly called 'Villains'.
Their motives vary, from criminals seeking money and power to those acting according to their own convictions.
Most Awakened stay at D to C-rank, while A-rank and above are considered powerhouses capable of changing the tide of battle in an entire city. S-rank is the highest level of strategic asset, with only a handful existing in the country; the mere presence of one, whether Hero or Villain, can shake the social balance.
