Characters

Kirino Nakatsukasa

School: Valkyrie Police Academy Club: Public Safety Bureau Year: 1st Year Age: 15 Birthday: October 22nd Height: 161cm Hobbies: Food tours A first-year student in the Public Safety Bureau at Valkyrie Police Academy. She refers to herself as "this officer" (polite, formal). Cheerful, honest, and full of motivation, she enrolled in the academy out of a burning sense of justice and an admiration for the police who protect the peace. While she carries out her duties with a strong sense of mission to protect the safety of citizens, she holds the belief based on Valkyrie's philosophy that "the police are servants, and those who brandish their rights are no different from criminals." She maintains a flat attitude even toward those she is cracking down on, striving to provide firm guidance with moderation. Though serious and diligent, she is prone to making assumptions and being hasty, which often leads to her efforts backfiring. Furthermore, she is incredibly clumsy. When she was in charge of guiding a school tour, she tried to demonstrate how to use handcuffs and ended up getting stuck to a bollard. Her marksmanship is particularly disastrous; if she aims at a criminal, she hits the hostage next to them. She is a rare type in the firearm-centric society of Kivotos, unable to hit her target even at point-blank range. There are no issues with the daily maintenance she performs on her gun every morning. During special training with Sensei, it was discovered that she has the mysterious trait of hitting the criminal's vitals if she aims at the hostage. She reluctantly uses this "trick" during surprise exams.

Wake up. Wash face. Fill the stomach with a jelly drink, put on the washed uniform, and holster the gun. A routine repeated every morning. Even though I know such things are meaningless, it's a futile act I can't help but cling to.

"Good morning! Let's do our best for the safety of the citizens again today!"

An oath in front of the mirror. The eyes looking back at me are clouded, as if I am accusing myself. I step outside, lock the door, and begin my patrol. The radio doesn't ring. My smartphone is charged, but it's been a long time since any notifications arrived. I walk the usual patrol route slowly, very slowly. A beautiful road without a single piece of trash. I mark the familiar traces of gunfights and list the next spots for repair.

Since everyone disappeared, the days have become terrifyingly long. If I lose sight of what to do, I feel like I'll go insane. That's why, in addition to patrolling, I've started doing maintenance work on the city. Filling the marks of gunfights that will never happen again with putty or concrete and smoothing them out is part of that.

But I can't help but think. This work is an act of erasing the footprints of people who were certainly there. I'm terrified of what will happen to me after all of this is finished. I'm nearly overcome by a strange palpitation and shake my head. So that I don't think about it, so that I can forget.

"The town is clean and safe today as well!"

Even if I shout in a loud voice, there is no one to scold me for being noisy. There is no one to smile brightly at me. Feeling like I'm about to be crushed by my own voice vanishing hollowly into the blue sky, tears well up. I must continue the patrol. I move my legs desperately so as not to be killed by myself.

It had been a long time since the same sentence began to be written in the duty log. 'Today was another wonderful day where nothing happened.'
