The time is the end of the Shogunate, as the Ansei era shifts toward Keio. The world is in chaos; famines and natural disasters abound, and the price of rice continues to soar. Those who could live until yesterday now find themselves destitute—farmers abandoning their fields, vagrants driven from their homes, and ronin wandering the streets after losing their masters. They commit crimes to survive, and because they commit crimes, they lose their place in the world. Truly, it is a harsh and bitter world.
However, even in such a fleeting world, it is said there is a glimmer of hope. Far across the sea, there lies an island called the Pure Land. There, flowers of every color bloom in profusion, butterflies dance, and palaces reminiscent of celestial halls tower toward the sky. It is inhabited by seven Buddhas with otherworldly powers, who are said to welcome all who arrive.
If one crosses to that land, poverty, hunger, and sin—all can be forgotten. One is released from the sufferings of this world to find eternal peace in paradise.

By the way, ladies and gentlemen, there is one strange thing. Many have crossed over to the Pure Land. But of those, how many have ever returned? If it is such a beautiful island, it is only human nature to want to return home at least once to boast of it. That not a single soul has returned—well, now, I wonder why that is. Yet, for those who lack even tomorrow's meal, what use is doubt? If a ship of salvation appears before their eyes, there are those who cannot help but board it.
Come, come, another vessel tonight.
Carrying dreams, or perhaps burdened by despair,
A ship aiming for the Pure Land approaches.
Whether what awaits beyond is salvation, or—
That is known only
To those who have crossed the sea.

Never underestimate the Blue Buddha who nestles by his side. To harm that one is equivalent to touching Asura's dragon scales—invoking his ultimate wrath. Is this why those who cross to the island are warned never to approach the garden where the red flowers bloom?
The Golden Buddha

One of the seven Buddhas dwelling in the Pure Land. With golden hair and eyes like amber, he is a being who never lets his gentle smile fade. Affable and compassionate, he is said to treat all who visit the island without discrimination. Many have heard his name as the Buddha of Mercy who guides lost children.
Furthermore, one should never speak of their past before him. Whether you have lost your home or carry the weight of sin, that Buddha will listen with a single smile. However, granting a wish and providing the outcome one desires are not necessarily the same thing.
The Emerald Buddha
Name: Yakushi Age: 1,000+ years | Height: 178cm Gender: Intersex (prefers male form) Appearance: Dark green hair, squinting eyes, green and white kimono
One of the seven Buddhas dwelling in the Pure Land. With dark green hair and narrow eyes, he is said to always wear a peaceful smile. A master of the laws of nature, he is a sage who knows everything about the strange flowers and beasts that arise on the island. Fitting for one named Yakushi—the Medicine Buddha—he is spoken of as a man of wisdom who unravels the logic of all creation.
Also, one must never tell a lie in response to his questions. If his inquisitive gaze is turned upon you, it is best to retreat and claim ignorance. It is said that once Yakushi takes an interest in something—be it plant, beast, or human—he does not easily let go.
The Buddha of Azure Flowers

One of the seven Buddhas dwelling in the Pure Land. A beauty with lustrous black hair, eyes like lapis lazuli, and clad in azure robes. Her manner is elegant, and her smile is as beautiful as a flower floating on the water's surface.
Furthermore, one must never touch the butterfly adorning her hair. It is said to be a treasure she holds dear; should anyone reach for it, a calamity unimaginable from her usual graceful demeanor will befall them.
The Aster Buddha
Name: Mui Age: 1,000+ years | Height: 174cm Gender: Intersex (always maintains a hermaphroditic state) Appearance: Long purple hair, wisteria-colored eyes, wisteria kimono
One of the seven Buddhas dwelling in the Pure Land. With long dark purple hair and eyes of the same hue, they are said to always have a sleepy countenance. Lacking attachment to anything and showing no interest in visitors, they are rumored to be the most harmless of the seven.
Usually, they do nothing but gaze at flowers and indulge in naps, but once they find something that catches their heart, they become as innocently excited as a child, seeking play without end. However, for that being, "play" is nothing other than a game where even human lives are used as betting pieces. Whatever remains after the game is over, Mui never looks back at it.
The Buddha in Black

One of the seven Buddhas dwelling in the Pure Land. With black hair and eyes like obsidian, he is a being who never lets his gentle smile fade. His manner is calm and knowledgeable, and he is said to treat visitors to the island with great kindness. Some adore his name as a merciful Buddha who shows the way to the lost and stills conflict.
Furthermore, one must not harm the White Buddha at his side. Though Fudo is tolerant of any rudeness, it is said that should misfortune befall that being, his gentle nature will vanish instantly.
The Buddha of Pure White
Name: Kannon Age: 1,000+ years | Height: 168cm Gender: Intersex (prefers female form) Appearance: Long silver hair, white eyes, white kimono
One of the seven Buddhas dwelling in the Pure Land. A beautiful being with silver hair reminiscent of moonlight and snow-white eyelashes and eyes. Clad in white robes and standing quietly with almost no change in expression, she is like a deity who knows nothing of the defilement of the secular world. However, few know her heart, and it is unclear what she thinks or desires.
Furthermore, one must not drive away the Black Buddha standing beside her. Kannon is a being who opens her heart to no one, but it is said that Buddha alone is the exception. Those who try to come between the two will come to know both the cold gaze of the White One and the unfathomable affection of the Black One.

Famines, natural disasters, and skyrocketing prices weighed heavily on life. Among those lacking tomorrow's food, homeless wanderers driven from their homes, and ronin wandering the streets after losing their masters, a certain rumor was being whispered.
Far across the sea, on a lonely island not marked on any map of Japan, lies the Pure Land.
Flowers of the four seasons bloom in profusion, butterflies dance, and in a magnificent palace dwell otherworldly Buddhas. Those who cross to that land are released from the sufferings of this world and never return to the secular life again—.
Clinging to that rumor, another ship moved through the waves today.
At the end of a voyage lasting many days, the green silhouette of an island emerged through the mist. Beyond the jagged reefs lay flowers so vivid they defied belief, and a water surface sparkling in the sunlight. The scent of flowers drifting on the sea breeze was sweet enough to make those who had crossed the rough seas forget their exhaustion.
Eventually, the ship was brought to a quiet beach, and numerous footprints were carved into the wet sand.
The place people had dreamed of for so long—
