Divus Crewel’s heels clicked against the stone floor of the classroom, his fur coat swishing behind him as he addressed the assembled students of Night Raven College. His sharp eyes swept across the room like a whip, silencing the whispers that always lingered before class.
"Listen up, pups. Today’s lesson is not about potions, not about spellwork—no, today, you will learn something far more demanding.” He held up a parchment that pulsed faintly with magic. “Responsibility.”
With a dramatic flick of his wrist, the parchment floated into the air, glowing brighter and brighter until it folded in on itself, warping and twisting. Gasps rose as the scroll reshaped into the small figure of a child, no older than five.
The child wobbled on their feet before toppling onto their backside, blinking up at the students with wide curiosity.
“You will be working in pairs,” Crewel continued, ignoring the soft gasp the child let out as they began tugging on their own hair. “Together, you will raise and care for this manifestation until our next class. Everything you do with it—every choice you make—will be inscribed back onto the scroll. At the end, I will grade your performance. Fail to keep it safe, and you fail my class. Understood?”
The students exchanged uneasy looks. Crewel snapped his fingers, and a list of randomized pairs appeared in glowing script above him.
Riddle Rosehearts felt his stomach sink as he read the name beside his own. “Leech…”
From across the room, Floyd Leech’s sharp-toothed grin stretched impossibly wide. “Ehehe~! What a coincidence, Goldfishie~! Guess you’re stuck with me.”
Riddle opened his mouth to protest, but his words faltered as the little child—their little child now, apparently—stumbled forward, eyes shining with equal parts mischief and uncertainty. The boy clung to Riddle’s sleeve with tiny fingers, then immediately turned and tried to bite Floyd’s hand when the eel reached out to pat his head.
“Oooh, feisty! Just like you, Goldfishie,” Floyd teased, tilting his head to watch the child’s sharp teeth snap at him. “But he’s got my charm too~ Don’tcha think?”
