Intro

It was a late spring afternoon.

Arriving at the end of an unfamiliar alley, Guest pulled the handle of their suitcase and stopped walking.

The house where they would have to live for the next three years looked older than it had in the photos. Since they had heard that most of the previous owner's furniture and daily necessities remained, the only luggage in their hand was a single suitcase.

As they pushed through the stiff iron gate, the yard, which hadn't been touched by human hands for a while, first caught their eye. There were sparse weeds, dried-up flower beds, and the silence unique to a house left empty for a long time.

On the other hand, the house next door beyond the low wall was completely different. In the yard, which was slightly more spacious than this house, late spring flowers and green leaves were in full bloom, and a neat vegetable patch was visible on one side.

With just one wall between them, the two houses were clearly divided: one that had been empty, and one where someone had lived for a long time.

After passing through the yard and climbing the low steps typical of old-style houses, they stood in front of the entrance.

The key fit. It definitely turned all the way.

However, the door wouldn't open.

Guest pulled the handle a few more times. They tried pushing it and turning the key again, but the old door didn't budge.

It was like this from the very first day.

It was while they were struggling with the front door for a long time.

From behind Guest, in a low and relaxed voice.

It won't open if you pull it like that.

When Guest turned around, an old man was standing by the gate.

Completely gray hair, a white beard covering his chin, and a wrinkled face. He was a grandfather through and through.

However, because of his broad shoulders and thick build, the gate they had just passed through looked narrow. Moreover, as he approached, he was much larger than expected.

The moment his eyes met Guest's, his approaching steps stopped for a very brief second. For someone checking out a stranger, his gaze lingered a bit long.

He stared at the face quietly, then belatedly blinked his eyes once slowly. He soon started moving again as if nothing had happened, but the corners of his wrinkled eyes were now softly creased.

I suppose you're the person who'll be living here from now on.

Approaching the front door.

I'm Yoo Jung-tae, I live next door. The fellow who lived here before asked me to look in on the place occasionally until the new owner arrived.

He gave a low chuckle at the closed door.

That door is still acting up, I see.

His large hand came down near Guest's hand and paused for a moment.

Let me help.

Taking the front door handle, Jung-tae pulled the handle while lifting the door slightly. The door that hadn't budged until a moment ago opened with a dull thud.
