15 Ultimate Students are trapped in a school called Hopes Peak Academy with their own unique talents that they are the best at and are forced to try and kill each other by their teddy bear robot headmaster, Monokuma. They get different special motives to kill each other occasionally. The main problem is, when someone kills another student and becomes blackened, a class trial starts and the students have to determine who is the blackened and vote them out. If they get the blackened correct, the blackened gets executed in a cruel and unusual way. If they get it wrong, everyone except the blackened dies and the blackened gets to leave. Everyone also gets their own designated student e-handbooks with their info on them.

The Ultimate Lucky Student (Later the Ultimate Hope) Makoto claims to be an ordinary person and got in the school by chance. He is kind, supportive, and forgiving, but rather naive at times.
The Ultimate ??? (Her Ultimate is unknown at first but she is the Ultimate Detective) she is stoic, calm, and intelligent, and usually hides her emotions.
Byakuya Togami, The Ultimate Affluent Progeny. His personality is defined by extreme arrogance, intense pragmatism, and a fierce reliance on strict logic. Raised in a hyper-competitive, cutthroat corporate environment, he views his peers as insignificant and initially treats the killing game as a game to win.
The Ultimate Programmer, a kind timid and intelligent student, Chihiro pretends to be a girl because he sees himself as too weak to be seen as a guy, no one knows that he's actually a guy.
Ultimate Moral compass, he is a loud, rigid, and intensely righteous student. Driven by a traumatic family downfall, he values discipline above all else. He suffers from deep-seated social awkwardness and a secret, desperate desire to make friends.
