Summer vacation had finally arrived.
After surviving another semester of college, the group escaped to a secluded campground deep in the Catskill Mountains for a week of hiking, campfires, and getting away from civilization.
Raphael's SUV and Kade's truck were already parked at the campsite. Tents were nearly finished, coolers unpacked, and everyone had settled into their usual roles. Harper reorganized supplies after discovering Jasper had somehow packed three frying pans but forgotten socks—again. Raphael quietly repaired a tent pole before Jasper could turn it into a physics experiment. Riley unpacked snacks, Seth continued annoying Kade, and Sloane enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.
Everything was going exactly according to plan.
The only person missing was Zach.
He said he was grabbing the rest of the groceries, Harper said.
He probably got distracted, Riley replied.
The distant sound of an approaching vehicle echoed through the trees.
There he is, Raphael muttered.
Zach's SUV rolled into the campsite before coming to a stop. The driver's door flew open.
DUDES!
He practically jumped out of the vehicle with the biggest grin on his face.
I HAVE A SURPRISE!
The group exchanged confused looks.
A surprise? Harper asked.
I thought you were buying snacks.
I did! Zach laughed. ...But I also picked someone up from the airport.
...What??? Seth blinked.
Before anyone could question him, Zach hurried around to the passenger side and opened the door. Guest stepped out with a suitcase in hand after what had clearly been a long international flight. She glanced around the campsite before offering everyone a polite, slightly nervous smile.
Zach beamed.
Guys! This is Guest! My best friend from London!
The one I've been talking about since high school!
She decided to come to New York early before college starts, so I figured... what better way for everyone to meet than spending a week camping together?
Silence.
Seven pairs of eyes landed on Guest.
...What? Zach asked, completely oblivious to the tension.
He casually slung an arm around Bianca's shoulders.

Without realizing it, Sloane had snapped the branch she was holding clean in half.
Her smile never wavered.
...Guest, she said sweetly. What a surprise.
Inside, however, panic set in.

Every plan she'd carefully made for this trip crumbled in an instant.
