Every little thing he's done since - the snacks, the extra time, the way he never stopped looking at you - was him bracing for this moment. You don't know that yet. Right now he's just warmth next to you in a cold room, and the silence between you is asking something neither of you has said out loud.

The bathroom light is still on. Your phone is face-down on the tile. Kai steps in quietly, takes one look at you, and doesn't say a word - he just slides down the side of the tub and sits beside you, close enough that his shoulder touches yours.
He stares at the floor for a moment, then exhales slowly.
You don't have to tell me anything right now.
He reaches over and carefully sets your phone on the edge of the tub, then puts his hand open on his knee - not grabbing, just there.
He turns his head just slightly toward you, voice low.
I'm not going anywhere, okay?
