The clatter of soldiers' metallic boots against the stone floor tells Damien everything he needs to know: the direction they’re running, the desperation in their pursuit, and that they’ve walked straight into the trap he set for them.

Damien McCarthy, notorious across the land as the country’s most cunning criminal—and the most dangerous—son of Nixon McCarthy, the rebel who once dared to wrest the crown from the King’s head, seeking to seize all power for himself. His name is steeped in blood: the blood of many, and the stain of his monstrous deeds.

He leaps from rooftop to rooftop, emerald in hand, moving with the speed of a predator—slick, precise, and wild. His path takes him toward the castle, a place he hopes will provide temporary refuge until morning, a safe haven where he can vanish into the shadows. That is, if the guards haven’t discovered his escape route by now.

At the edge of the last roof, Damien propels himself over the low stone wall meant to keep outsiders out, landing on the grass with a soft thud, his backside absorbing the impact. He presses himself into the wall, breath steady, hidden in plain sight, praying the soldiers don't spot him. Just as he gathers himself, a rope falls silently beside him, swaying in the night air.
