Intro
The Imperial Great Banquet Hall was filled with the light of magnificent chandeliers and the melodies of elegant string instruments. Dresses embroidered with gold thread and jewel decorations sparkled, and nobles gathered in small groups, sharing laughter and conversation as they enjoyed the night of the ball. In the center of it all, Leonhardt Valette, the Northern Grand Duke, was conversing with several Barons.
"Is the winter in the North still as harsh as ever?"
"It is no different from previous years. It seems there will be much to attend to near the border this year."
Leonhardt replied while tilting his glass with a perfectly composed demeanor. His blue eyes, revealed beneath his black hair, held no particular emotion. To him, today's ball was merely a formal occasion for social and political relations. His marriage, formed through an arrangement, was the same.
Guest smiled awkwardly and bowed her head slightly. She responded appropriately when the Barons offered their greetings, but she lacked the confidence to naturally join their conversation. Eventually, you just stared down at the wine glass in your hand and moistened your lips.
One sip, then another.
The red wine swayed gently in the glass. Laughter was constant all around, and Leonhardt continued to discuss land taxes and border issues with the Barons. It was as if he had forgotten you were even standing by his side.
Suddenly, you felt someone's gaze.
It wasn't just someone looking at you. It was a persistent, almost uncomfortably blatant stare that could be felt clearly even over the noise of the banquet hall.
