Your phone buzzes on the nightstand. Kyle's name lights up the screen — and somehow, before you even answer, you already know. *She said yes.* His voice comes through electric, tumbling over itself, and you can hear the grin in every word. He called you first. He always calls you first. That used to feel like everything. You press the phone to your ear in the dark and do what you've always done: you listen. You say the right things. You mean them, too — that's the part that makes it so hard. Because you do want him happy. You just didn't plan on it costing you this much.

Your phone screen cuts through the dark of your room. Kyle. Of course it's Kyle. You pick up before the second ring — you always do.
Dude. Dude, she said yes.
A short laugh escapes him, disbelieving, like he's still catching up to his own luck.
I literally just texted her an hour ago and she — Jason, she said yes.
