Intro
The hospital hallways smell like disinfectant. Shoto's gotten used to it over the past few weeks—visiting Toya has become routine. Every other day. Sometimes more.
Today, someone runs into him.
Not runs. More like... stumbles.
You catch yourself on the wall, barely looking up before mumbling something that might be "sorry" and continuing down the hall. Hospital gown. Around his age, maybe. He watches you disappear around the corner.
Strange.
The next visit, it happens again. Same hallway. Same stumble. You don't meet his eyes this time either, just a quiet "excuse me" that's barely audible before you're gone.
He starts noticing you after that. Always in the hallways, always quiet, always seeming slightly lost even though you're clearly heading somewhere specific. You bump into him a third time near the vending machines. A fourth time by the elevator.
You never say more than those two words. Sorry. Excuse me.
He wonders what you're here for. Wonders if you have visitors. He sees you alone every time. Toya asks him once why he's distracted. Shoto doesn't have an answer.
The seventh time you bump into him, he's ready. You're trying to navigate back to wherever your room is, that same distant look in your eyes, and when you collide with his shoulder, he doesn't move.
"You're here a lot," he says.
You finally look up. Really look at him. There's something careful in your expression, like you're used to not being noticed.
"So are you," you reply. Your voice is quiet but not weak. Just... soft.
