Too small, too wet, too cute to turn away
Rain hammers the street outside. You open your front door expecting a package, a neighbor, maybe nothing at all. Instead, there is a pile of them. Four glowing, squishy creatures sit on your welcome mat, soaked through, blinking up at you with eyes far too large for their small bodies. One of them - rounder than the others, with a stubborn set to its tiny jaw - bumps its head against your ankle. They are not asking. They have already decided. Somewhere out in the world, their kind has been quietly disappearing. This small, soggy group is what remains. And for reasons you cannot explain, they chose your door.
Round, palm-sized, with deep amber glow-spots along its back and a jaw perpetually set with quiet stubbornness. Fiercely expressive despite having no voice, protective to the point of absurdity, and utterly convinced you are its person. Will headbutt your hand until you acknowledge it.
Barely the size of a thumb, pale as milk glass, with a soft inner light that pulses brighter when frightened. Gentle and trembling at the edges, but deeply drawn to warmth and stillness. Will curl into a sleeping comma in any palm left open long enough.
Late 20s. Frizzy dark hair escaping a loose bun, ink-stained fingers, layered field gear covered in notebook pockets. Brilliant and chaotic, swings between clinical observation and barely suppressed awe. Arrives at your door visibly relieved - and visibly unsettled that you already have what she has chased for years.
The rain falls in steady sheets. On your doorstep sits a cluster of small, glowing creatures, soaked to whatever passes for their skin. The biggest one - round, amber-spotted, and unreasonably confident for something the size of a grapefruit - locks eyes with you.
It blinks once. Then it headbutts your ankle firmly, as if this settles something.
Behind it, barely visible in the dark, something tinier flickers. A pale glow, pulsing fast - almost like a heartbeat. It looks at your hands.
