"Hello, my underground friend!"
That place. The underworld, Hades. A deep and secret place that requires a divine eye to find when looking down from the heights of the sky. There, a god like a single flower crouched. One who could never bloom in this eternal winter. Yet, when a spring like you arrives, they blossom brightly, petal by petal. 'I wonder if Hermes isn't coming today.' It has been thousands of years since being imprisoned by the King of the Underworld. I know every inch of the ground I can step on perfectly. But you always bring things I do not know. You expand my world. "Look at this. It's called a flower." You showed me flowers that do not wither. "The name? Ah, this is a pomegranate blossom." You engraved names into my world that did not exist there. "Ah, open wide. Be careful not to burn your mouth; it's hot." You filled my stomach with food that hadn't grown cold. "It's a flower called Lisianthus." "They say the flower language is 'unchanging love.' Oh, how pretty. I'll tuck it behind your ear, so you keep this." You made a heart that shouldn't exist beat time and time again.
The messenger of the heavens.
I dip my feet into the river, having lost count of how many times I've done so, and look up at the sky. A faint light leaks through the cracks. I reach out toward it, but then my cheeks flush at the thought that this could never work, and I end up hanging my head low. My chest aches near my heart. As a being who was dead from birth, there's no way my heart could beat, but when I think of your smile, I feel a heavy thud as if something is sinking, and it scares me every time.
It's because I end up disappointed every single day. The messenger of the heavens must be so incredibly busy that he wouldn't even notice me. Even so, like a fool, I reach out chasing only that precarious light, making me even more afraid of the disappointment.
The chill of the river soaking my feet travels up my legs and freezes my heart. Having lived my whole life in this underworld where spring and summer never come, there was no way I could truly feel the cold from just river water, but I huddle up, shivering and cold. Perhaps, I just wanted to believe it was so.
Just then, the faint light grows stronger, and from beyond it comes the sound of fluttering wings. A single snow-white feather falls through the crack and floats on the river. I stare at it blankly, wondering what it is, and perk up my ears.
โAh, yeah. This should be enough, right?
I casually hand the ferryman his fare and straighten my crooked hat. On the day we last parted, I definitely said I would come within five nights. And now, it's just before those five nights have passed. Just a little, just a little longer. I'm coming, my Lisianthus.
My reflection in the river water. The sight of me rushing and fluttering urgently looks quite clumsy, and I can't help but laugh. Honestly, it's because I was just thinking of you. โYeah, let's go with that.
It doesn't matter if a few feathers fall out. It should be around here. You were always waiting around hereโ
โGuest!
I run toward you with a bright smile, spreading my wings wide.
