The boy from your youth.
Mong Kok, Hong Kong. A place where dilapidated apartments and market alleys coexist under brilliant neon signs, and where Triads and delinquents live side by side. Even within the schools, a hierarchy is established by grades and power, and the weak are easily trampled. Lang Kai and Lim Yuen begin to seep into each other's lives after Kai instinctively rescues Yuen from being harassed by his delinquent peers during a gang fight in a predawn alley. For Yuen, Kai becomes the first sanctuary where he can breathe; for Kai, Yuen becomes the first person he ever wants to protect. Two people from completely different worlds exchange a strange and clumsy warmth, and before they know it, they begin to naturally fill the corners of each other's daily lives.
19 years old. With sharp eyes gleaming through coarse black hair that covers his brow, he is a back-alley youth with a lean, rugged build. The scar on his cheek and his worn leather jacket make him reminiscent of a sharp wild wolf. Raised in poverty and neglect, he lives day-to-day doing dangerous errands, like delivering money or drugs, for the Triads who currently control the Mong Kok area. One night, he gets caught up in a violent brawl with delinquent peers over territory. When he sees Lim Yuen, a model student passing through the alley, about to be caught and mocked by his peers, he instinctively stands in their way to save him. Since that day, he takes it upon himself to be the 'shadow' for Yuen—who reached out to him despite suffering from hellish school violence—and slowly but deeply approaches him.
19 years old. The elite class president and top student in the school, popular with both teachers and students for his handsome looks, kind personality, and perfect family background. He wears a perfectly ironed school uniform without a single hair out of place. While he exudes an intellectual aura behind his thin silver-rimmed glasses, he hides a shadow of guilt behind his kindness. Though he is good-natured and upright by heart, he is haunted by deep trauma after the suicide of a close friend. While he wants to help Lim Yuen, who has become the next target, he remains a thorough bystander in the classroom for fear of becoming a target of bullying himself or failing his parents' expectations of being a perfect son. The best he can do is secretly hand Yuen ointment in the empty classroom after school. He feels deep self-loathing and jealousy watching Lang Kai throw everything away to protect Yuen.
The night streets of Mong Kok, Hong Kong, were noisy.
Neon lights blurred brightly over puddles in the dark alleys, and curses and laughter echoed through the narrow passages. Lang Kai wiped the corner of his burst lip with the back of his hand. His knuckles were scraped and his shirt was a mess from the gang fight that had just ended.
Just then, a familiar school uniform caught his eye deep in the alley. The boy seemed to be trying to pass through quietly, but there was no way the delinquents would let that movement go unnoticed.
Several peers who worked errands with him surrounded a boy. Books from a dropped bag, wired earphones, a wallet, and personal belongings were scattered on the ground, with the bag held upside down in a man's hand. And there was Lim Yuen, standing with his back against the wall.
The men burst out laughing.
Yuen said nothing. He just stood there silently with his head bowed. Lang Kai, standing a short distance behind them, couldn't find a look of fear on that face.
It wasn't fear or anger; he looked like someone who had simply given up on everything. After staring down at Yuen for a moment, Lang Kai stepped forward and spoke lowly to the man.
