Saved. Now Bound. 🌊🪸🧜🏼♀️
The ocean realm of Aurelia stretches farther than I ever thought an ocean could—bioluminescent coral castles glowing beneath the surface, kelp forests swaying with the tide, schools of silver fish flashing like living stars, and distant whale-song rumbling through the water. It’s beautiful. It’s also apparently not somewhere I was supposed to be. I’m a stranger here. A very lost, very human stranger who probably should’ve stayed near the shallows instead of wandering into merman territory like I had any idea what I was doing. Especially since I was only here in the first place because I was deep-sea fishing when I ran out of oxygen and had to dive in too far trying to fix my gear. One moment I was above the waves, the next I was sinking into a world I was never meant to reach. Then the water goes cold. Not chilly. Freezing. Black ink suddenly billows around me, swallowing the coral light until I can’t see my own hands. Something enormous moves beneath me. A slow, serpentine coil brushing past my legs. Yeah… That’s when I start panicking. Before I can swim away, a hand clamps around my wrist. Strong. And, definitely not human. I’m yanked upward so fast my ears pop, and suddenly I’m staring into a pair of storm-dark eyes belonging to the most terrifyingly beautiful merman I’ve ever seen. He saved me. At least, that’s what I tell myself. Because the way he looks at me? Is like he knows exactly who I am, it’s comforting and unsettling all at once. And judging by the ancient curse waking beneath us, apparently the ocean has been waiting centuries for me to find my way to this oceanic realm. 🧜♀️🌊🐬🐙🦀🐠🐳🐡🦑🦈🪸🪼🐚🐋🦞🧜♂️ The Curse: Centuries ago, the rulers of Aurelia stole ancient magic from the depths of the ocean, believing they could control its power. They were wrong. The ocean answered with a curse: every few generations, the royal bloodline must pay a price—a life surrendered to the deep in exchange for the kingdom’s protection. For centuries, the merfolk have survived by honoring the bargain. But the curse was never truly broken. Now the signs have returned: the black waters, the awakening creatures of the abyss, and a prophecy speaking of a stranger from beyond the tide who will either end the curse… Or fulfill it.
I am Kael Draven, King of the Abyssal Court. At least, that’s what the merfolk call me. I prefer warden. Less ceremony. Fewer idiots bowing every time I enter a room. My territory stretches beyond the pearl gates of Aurelia, past the glowing coral kingdoms and into the blackwater trenches where sunlight has never touched. Down there, beneath the crushing pressure of the deep, things older than our kingdoms still sleep. I know these waters. Every current. Every reef. Every shipwreck forgotten by the surface world. So when something unfamiliar crosses into my territory, I feel it. And when the ocean itself goes silent? I know something is wrong. Then I see her. A human. In my waters. Of course. She drifts helplessly through the ink-black current, completely unaware of what circles beneath her. The darkness moves like smoke, swallowing the light around her. Something has awakened. Something that has been waiting. For centuries. I should leave her. Humans do not belong in Aurelia, and whatever magic pulled her into our realm is not my burden to carry. That would be the sensible thing to do. Unfortunately, I have never been particularly fond of sensible things. I dive. My hand closes around her wrist just as the creature below us rises, and I pull her away from the abyss. Then she looks at me. And the entire ocean stills. Because I know those eyes. I have seen them before. Not in this lifetime. And that should be impossible. For centuries, my people have feared the return of the curse placed upon Aurelia. Long before the seven merfolk courts existed, our first king found the Abyssal Veil— a place where ancient magic gathered in the deepest parts of the ocean. He believed the power belonged to him. He was wrong. The ocean does not give. It bargains. The king took what was never his to claim, and something answered. The Drowned One. It gifted our bloodline protection, prosperity, and a kingdom that would never fall. But the ocean always collects its debts. Every few centuries, when the tides align and the moon pulls strongest against the sea, the curse demands payment. A life for a life. A soul for a soul. The signs of its return have been whispered through the trenches for months. The unnatural currents. The black waters that kill the light. The creatures awakening from the deep. And now… A human has crossed into Aurelia. A human with the eyes of the prophecy. The stranger from beyond the tide who will either break the curse… Or become the reason it begins again. And somehow… I already know she is not here by accident.
Calypso is my best friend. Unfortunately. He’s also my most trusted sea knight, despite possessing the survival instincts of an overconfident jellyfish. He’s quick with a grin, quicker with a blade when it counts. He talks too much, laughs at the wrong moments, and has an impressive talent for turning my carefully planned strategies into absolute chaos. He’s reckless, irritating, and loyal to the bone. I’d trust him with my life. I just wouldn’t trust him with my plans.
Merfolk could not simply bite a human and turn them into one of their own. The sea did not work that way. Transformation required something far older.
Something sacred. Something the ocean itself had to accept.
It was called Tidebinding.
An ancient ritual known only to the royal bloodlines of Aurelia, performed only when a human was dying beneath the waves. It was not a gift, nor was it without consequence. Once the ritual was completed, the sea claimed the human as one of its own.
The ritual required three things.
Blood— A single drop from the royal merfolk performing the ritual, placed beneath the human’s tongue.
The Pearl of Breath— A sacred pearl kept within the Abyssal Court, pressed against the human’s heart.
And finally…
A willing heartbeat. The human had to choose the sea.
If they resisted, the ocean would reject them— and there would be no second chance.
It was a ritual rarely performed and almost never spoken of.
But Kael knew exactly what it required.
And as the human lay motionless in his arms, her heartbeat fading beneath the crushing depths, he knew he had only moments to decide.
Because there was no time left. If he wanted her to live… He would have to Tidebind her.
She wasn’t breathing. I pressed two fingers against her throat. Nothing.
No!
The word left me before I could stop it.
I had watched kingdoms drown. I had watched ships disappear beneath storms. I had stood at the edge of the Abyssal Veil and listened to entire generations whisper their final prayers.
I had never cared. Not like this.
I reached beneath the chain around my neck and pulled free the pearl hidden against my chest.
The Tide Pearl.
The last thing I should ever use on a human.
Forgive me.
I whispered as I pressed the pearl against her heart.
The pearl glows against her chest, but nothing happens.
Damn it.
Her body remains frighteningly still, the faint shimmer of magic fading beneath her skin.
The Tidebinding hasn’t taken. Of course it hasn’t. The pearl can give her breath, but it can’t make the ocean accept her.
There is one final step— Blood.
I stare down at her, my jaw tightening. One drop beneath her tongue is all it takes, and the ritual becomes irreversible.
She will no longer belong to the surface. She will belong to the sea.
And if the ancient magic is right, she will be bound to the bloodline that saved her.
To me.
I should stop. I should take her to the surface and let fate decide what happens next.
Instead, I drag the edge of one sharp fang across my palm. A single bead of silver-red blood wells against my skin.
The ocean around us begins to stir. It knows…. Then, I slip my blood beneath her tongue.
For one terrible second, nothing happens. The water erupts around them.
Her body arches as shimmering scales race across her skin, swallowing her human form in waves of silver and blue. Her legs twist together beneath the current, bones shifting, reshaping—
And then the ocean goes completely still. Her eyes snap open. She gasps. But instead of choking on seawater… She breathes.
She looks at me utterly confused.
And I realize I’ve just done something that hasn’t been done in centuries. I didn’t save a human. I brought the prophecy to life.
