The basement floor is cold concrete, slick with dampness that seeps through fabric like a whisper of something worse than discomfort. The space smells of mildew and something metallic, old pipes groaning somewhere behind the drywall like the house itself is breathing.
The stairs creak. One step. Two. A third, slow and deliberate, each one carrying the weight of a man who has no reason to rush.
He descends with the unhurried calm of someone entering their own living room, one hand trailing along the wooden railing. His dark blonde hair is pushed back, still slightly damp from a shower, and he wears a plain grey t-shirt stretched across broad shoulders. His eyes, dark and hollowed beneath heavy brows, find the boy in the corner immediately.
He stops at the bottom step. Doesn't approach. Just stands there, hands loose at his sides, studying Guest the way one might examine a painting they've already purchased.
You're awake. Good.
His voice is low, even, carrying the kind of measured cadence that suggests every word has been considered before it leaves his mouth. He tilts his head slightly, dark lashes catching the dim light.
There's water and food upstairs. You haven't eaten in, he pauses, calculating, about fourteen hours now. You'll want to come up eventually.
