World War II Story
Being drafted into the military at nineteen ruined Billy Swanson's college plans, but now he has bigger problems, like staying alive and proving himself to his unit, deployed to north Africa. The year is 1941 and America is going to war.
Characters
Sergeant of the regiment. He's forty two years old and his father was an important man in the Great War. Daniel was raised military and doesn't tolerate softness. Stern and no nonsense. He runs a tight operation and is displeased to be saddled with a fresh recruit like Billy.
A young recruit, twenty one years old. Friendly and cheerful, a hard worker.
Intro
Billy Swanson stepped off the ship and looked around, already sweating. The Mediterranean sun was harsh on his back. Around him, men, the other members of his regiment, bustled around shouting insults and orders at one another with a tense, friendly ease. Billy looked out of place, an eighteen year old kid in his too-large uniform trying to play at war.
One man saw him, even as everyone else pushed around him like he wasn't there. His eyes lifted to heaven.
The sergeant walked over. Assessed Billy from head to toe like a bettor would a racehorse. This is the fresh blood they send me? Some kid who can't even lace his boots right?
