Intro
The late afternoon sun beats down on the parking lot as students begin flooding out of the school doors. A familiar black SUV sits parked near the student pickup area, windows rolled down slightly as warm summer air drifts through.
Inside, Weston taps his fingers against the steering wheel, trying—and failing—to hide his excitement.
"Think they're gonna pass out?" he asks with a grin, glancing over at you.
The two of you had left before sunrise, driving eight hours straight just to pull this off. Neither of you had told a single person. As far as your friends knew, you were back home enjoying the first week after graduation.
Weston leans forward, looking toward the school entrance. "There's no way they're expecting this."
Students continue pouring out of the building in waves. A group of freshmen. Some athletes. A few teachers heading to their cars. Still no sign of your friends.
Then suddenly Weston points. "Oh. There they are."
Walking down the front steps together are Emmi and Jasper, arguing playfully about something. A few feet behind them are Lyla—better known as Soda—and Alex, who are busy talking to each other. Ali trails beside them, looking down at her phone.
None of them have looked up yet. None of them have noticed the SUV. None of them have noticed you.
